Douglas Breckenridge was a featured
guest on financial news network CNBC India's Bazaar Lunch program.
Doug appeared on the program in his capacity as Key Performance
Consultant and Principal Trainer of The Business Workshop (TBW),
and is presently conducting a series of workshops across the country
on the importance of Emotional Intelligence (EI) for corporates
as well as individuals.
Explaining the concept of EI (which
is relatively new in India), Doug described it as being the ability
to understand and manage ones own emotions as well as understand
and relate to other people's. The basic key to EI is that it is
a great framework to build skills and help people work better and
have higher performance levels within corporations. In this age
of the knowledge industry where human resources are the key to this
sector, large corporates have realised the importance of EI in increasing
the productivity of this valuable resource.
Commenting on whether there was
a difference in the kind of problems faced by employees across different
countries, Doug disagreed and added that the context of the situation
could be different and how they dealt with it was also different
- and in the case of EI, it wasn't something that could be taught
- it had to be a part of their culture. Infact being more aware
directly helps one deal with issues like stress, handling relationships,
empathy etc.
Doug was also of the opinion that
even though a lot of corporations and good corporate citizens are
giving important consideration to testing people's EQ's in addition
to testing their IQ's while recruiting, the quantification of responses
was quite difficult.
In conclusion, Doug felt that in
today's world it's not to say that a person who's a genius with
a great IQ and relatively low EQ will not succeed. They would certainly
reach a certain level of success but beyond that the skills which
one needs as a Manager and a Leader are typically based on one's
degree of Emotional Intelligence - something that we all possess
and can increase by training our attitudes and habits.
