The Will To Achieve!!
Harsh
Verma, Instructional Designer, The Business Workshop
The
basic 'raison de aitre' behind any success, personal or organisational
is the urge to achieve. At a time when predominant theories lay
emphasis on social conditions and discount the efforts of individuals,
it becomes difficult to feel that one's own efforts can bring
about any change. Yet the founders of mighty empires, political
or business, have often been ordinary men and women who had nothing
other than a burning desire to succeed. A study of such individuals,
especially in the Indian context, is then necessary to illustrate
the trait and draw lessons for ourselves.
The question then arises;
What are the constituents of Achievement Orientation ? Let us
take a look!
Achievers Are Proactive..
Individuals who have a strong achievement orientation look for
opportunities to act decisively. This differentiates them from
others who either wait for opportunities to fall in their lap
or actively discard such opportunities in the belief that nothing
would ever come of our efforts. Greece in the 4th and 5th centuries
B.C was a land of city states. The notion of an empire covering
entire Greece not to speak of other lands did not even exist.
Yet, Alexander, a lad who was barely out of his teens, founded
an empire which spread over three continents and in might &
majesty was equaled only by the British Empire two millennia
later. This was made possible because he took the initiative
to seek opportunities for expansion in the East rather than be
content with the possession of Athens and Sparta.
Achievers Make Efforts Aligned With A Well Articulated Vision...
Achievers clearly define what they want to achieve and measure
progress by that yardstick. For Chandragupta Maurya, his vision
was a North Indian empire and he did not rest after he defeated
the Nanda kings of Magadh (modern Bihar). He continued his campaigns
till he defeated Selukus Neketor and annexed Afghanistan as well.
Often people put in substantial effort, but fail to get success
because their efforts are not geared to fulfilling their purpose.
The revolt of 1857 was a remarkable burst of activity. Yet the
revolt failed because the rebels did not have a clear, articulated
goal and their vigorous efforts were aimed at fulfilling petty
ends.
Achievers Persist
Despite Setbacks...
Achievers persist with their efforts despite initial setbacks.
After Mr. Narayanan Murthy and his colleagues left Patni computers
to launch Infosys, they languished for nine years. The returns
were so low that the partners began to think of disbanding the
set up. It was Mr. Narayanan Murthy who dissuaded everybody from
taking that step and getting them to resolve to carry on. Today,
Infosys is a standing testimony to that decision.
Achievers Change
Visions With A Change In Circumstance...
In an article in the Futurist, Warren Bennis says that successful
leaders reassess their vision with a change in the environment.
The leadership of the Indian National Movement is a standing
example of this phenomenon. In the late 19th century, when national
consciousness was not fully developed, the goal of the Congress
was to achieve equal opportunities for Indians in the administration.
With the growth in national feelings the leaders changed the
goal into a call for Swarajya & Home Rule. Finally, insensitive
response from the British coupled with widespread nationalist
sentiment led to the call for Poorna Swarajya or Independence
in 1929. There was a section of the Congress termed as the moderates
which looked upon the radicalism in the Congress with disfavour
and clung to the original vision. It broke away and faded from
the political scene.
Throughout history,
those who have had the courage to strike out independently to
achieve their aims, have been the ones who brought about change.
In the fast changing world of today, organisations need such
individuals to succeed in the years ahead. Maybe, you can make
the difference!
